Into the Bahia underworld - moqueca lunch with Fafa, Crispina and Eliza

Today I had the opportunity to visit a family on the favela-ish waterfront of Bahia. To enter their world, under the highway with luxury apartment buildings at my back and the apparent squalor of a real underworld, complete with drug gang lookouts and dilapidated constructions of all shapes and sizes was eye-opening to say the least.

Arriving at Fafa's home, I was blown away by their practically idyllic location immediately on the water, with fresh water from a spring, the sound of the ocean and their pristine, comfortable home. Taking off my shoes, I went immediately into the kitchen where we made moqueca, the classic Bahian seafood dish with ingredients we had previously purchased at the market. When I say we, I mean my guide Joao from BahiaMatisse and I.

Enjoy the photos; Eliza was absolutely a charmer and Crispina and Fafa the best hosts. A great day!
