Sao Gabriel da Cachoeira
SAO GABRIEL DA CACHOEIRA, AMAZONAS
Brazil’s Azul Airlines flight of approximately an hour will replace a six hour or more boat trip and take you further up the Rio Negro, close to the Venezuela and Colombia borders, to a tiny town called Sao Gabriel da Cachoeira. With 24 ethnic groups making up the population, the town feels very indigenous and also somewhat abandoned by the powers that be.
Nevertheless, the town is home to a most amazing river beach, and gigantic rock formations that are all excellent places to observe stunning sunsets. It is also the starting point to those intrepid travelers that want to tackle Pico da Neblina, a challenging climb that takes you from humid and hot to very cold at 3,000 meters above sea level.
